"I hadn’t previously heard of Miller Carter restaurants until a family meal was booked at the Brighton location. I’m always happy with a good steak in front of me, and, the website made the place look appealing, a bit swank even. I was quite curious by the ‘no sportswear’ dress code too (not that I’m usually found in a tracksuit . The venue has plenty of parking which was useful given we were all driving due to one of the regular train strikes. On arrival, I first visited one of the individual bathroom cubicles, to be greeted by a large flob on the wall above the toilet. The venue of course can’t be accountable for the actions of customers, sportswear or not, but this was dried so had been there for some time. Generally, with the exception of our waitress, the front of house staff took the approach of not being helpful or even wanting to be there. On asking the restaurant manager if there was another table available as the one given was between the front door and a family party with several children, we were sarcastically told, “no it’s Saturday afternoon and it’s busy” (although there were other tables in the restaurant that remained vacant during our visit . The sensation of grubbiness I found on arrival, continued at the restaurant table, which was all set up but hadn’t been wiped down thoroughly, my chair too had crumbs and detritus on it from previous diners, the water glass I was given had a slightly off-putting opaqueness to it. Nothing felt quite clean enough. With three menus presented, there was certainly lots of choice. We all went for the set menu, which at £15.95 for two courses seemed good value. There was a bit of a wait for the first course, which all varied from the cooler side of warm to cold. But it was OK. As M C seem to set their stall as “the masters of steak”, this seemed like the obvious choice for most of us. The steaks weren’t cooked the way we asked, mine medium rather than med-rare, the other was on the well-done rather than med-rare as examples. It was tasty enough, helped by the dripping sauce, but there was an impressive strip of gristle running through the meat, giving the occasional rubbery crunch. My quadruple cooked chips tasted mainly of oil, and the ‘onion loaf’ seemed to be some bottom of the fryer scrapings. Everything also seemed to go cold as I first looked at it When I think of steak I also think of mustard, the only option of which at M C was English (surely more of a mustard for roast beef or ham? which we initially declined. When we asked the waitress that we would actually have some English mustard, she told us there now wasn’t any and that someone had “gone to the shops to get some”. This was, frankly, the highlight of the visit, and the waitress thanked us for finding it so hilariously funny rather than be annoyed. The venue and food were all a bit of a disappointment really (how do “steakhouse restaurant experts” mess up steak and chips so badly? and we spent a lot of the meal talking about other restaurants, food we’ve enjoyed and places we should try. The waitress was however the star of the show, courteous, empathetic and happy to tell us how it is."
