"Hidden gem of the Byward market. Great atmosphere and the staff very attentive. Chicken parmigiana was so juicy and pasta sauce was on point. Pizzas are so delicious and yes even the salad was tasty."

"My partner and I were visiting friends and family in the Ottawa area from Calgary and wanted to treat ourselves and my cousin to a special night out. After reading rave reviews and considering their menu we opted to dine at NeXT. Regrettably our experience did not live up to our expectations.FOODWe started with three appetizers. We ordered deep fried cheese curds which we all found tasted stale and which were so hard that the piece I tried injured the roof of my mouth. These went uneaten. The house fries were charred (literally black) and we're also left unfinished. My partner found the baguette with pea spread much too greasy. I didn't mind it but overall was unimpressed.For our main dishes we ordered the sashimi "pizza", the crispy beef and the grilled rib eye. The steak was cooked well and the "pizza" tasted good. The steak came with a side of fingerling potatoes that were in essence overcooked, dry, deep fried potato skins. These also went uneaten. The "pizza" was, in my opinion, a $20 appetizer, consisting of 4 bite-sized portions of deep fried rice, each with a slice of pickled radish and a slice of tuna sashimi. Calling this dish a "pizza" was misleading. The crispy beef was a bowl of rice with cilantro and overcooked deep fried candied beef that went uneaten. None of the dishes came with any vegetables. The theme was deep-fried protein and starch. Reminiscent of pub fare. We opted to cut our losses and skip dessert.SERVICEOur waitress wasn't great. She didn't ask us how our meal was at any time. When she noticed that we hadn't eaten our appetizers she made some comment along the lines of "aren't they delicious, never have any leftovers". We each ordered a drink with our appetizers, and when she cleared our appy dishes she took our wine and beer glasses as well without offering another drink. We had to flag her down to ask for more wine.VENUEAnd finally, the venue wasn't that pleasant. The washroom had no soap, the dining room has big windows overlooking the parking lot where we could watch the kitchen staff smoking, and their was liquid dripping from what I assume was an air conditioner in the ceiling onto the floor next to our table and splashing up onto my ankle. Gross.I really don't understand how NeXT has received such glowing reviews. Certainly not our experience. Cannot recommend this establishment."
