"This is a fab place to eat.... and the cocktails are wonderful as well. I have eaten at this fabulous restaurant through the complete luncheon menu. It has taken me nearly a year to do so, but each time I was never disappointed, ....not once. I ordered a Pimm 's 1 and it was not quite up to the bar, madam owner who makes a lovely Pimm 's 1 was not in the house, but the waiter called her and received an instruction, followed it and presented a very nice drink.I am sure he is practicing and will soon be as deft a hand as the lady owner. All details are observed in the restaurant, Even to the use of muslin covered lemon with the fish dishes. Most places in Vancouver do not use or know this is the correct way of serving a lemon half or wedge. So lets call it fine dining here, because it is fine dining."

"It is always a great evening in the wine bar with jeff and his crew! this visit we started with delicious cocktails mixed by jeff, ampersand at tee and mexicali mule were delicious! our firm the tapas was presented both beautifully and an incredible combination of aromen. the duck feeder rolls were filled with tenderer dee and the sour cherry cake sauce was so good, I wanted to go home a cripple (to pour over vanilla ice cream would be delicious.) the bark liquors, mushrooms and nut croquettes, flower cauliflower croquettes and fries were all great. to add a little more nutrition, we have the carburized brokkoli. one of our favorites added. I am so glad that jeff and his employees were able to congratulate their usual exceptional service and incredible food despite the closure and post covid restrictions!"

"Albeit I haven't been stopped in Cowichan Bay for probably two years, even though I live only a few kilometers away (and I've driven through it often enough), I thought the Masthead Restaurant would be a decent pace for my wife and I to celebrate our wedding anniversary (avoiding having to head into Victoria via the nightmare constriction traffic on the highway). We'd only been to the Masthead once before many years ago (around 2008 if I recall) and was less than impressed with the (at that time) pretentious server who said she didn't think the chef would prepare my duck breast well done. Call me crazy, but if I'm paying for it, it will get done exactly how I want it or I'll simply pay for the drinks and leave. Pretty simple math. Now, fast forward 22 July 2017. Time to give the Masthead another go. We arrived right at the appointed hour (6:30 p,m) and it was clearly busy in there. Over the hum of conversation and muted piped music, the staff could be heard busying themselves with getting people seated, preparing tables, and serving food and drinks. Normal stuff. I'd been quietly dreading the expectation of a stuffy (read sweaty) environment as the weather was quite close outside; the hot air heavy with humidity. But I was met inside by a fresh, delightful breeze from the sea, given that both the front door and the patio doors were open. The restaurant's temperature was perfect. The place had clearly been given a makeover sometime in the last few years, with the decor and fittings updated. We were met by an enthusiastic server (does anyone use the term waiter any more - it does seem more apropos, but I suppose the politically expedient will have none of it - nevertheless, I prefer it.) It was quite busy in there and our table was not quite ready. No matter. We were in no rush. Being seated at our table we were provided with water and menus and we explained as usual that my wife has celiac disease and I am dairy free. Our waiter said it was no problem at all. "We'll see", I thought. The test of such a bold statement being whether my wife gets sick later in the evening or not. I was impressed as I viewed the wine list; they stocked a great assortment of local wines. We chose a Blue Grouse Ortega (one of our favourite wines from one of our favourite local wineries), not bothering that we might be ordering red meat. The wine was served with class, each of us being first poured a taste for approval (it's Blue Grouse Ortega...hat's not to like).? I was quite impressed that the mark-up on the bottle was actually quite reasonable. Buying bottle of Ortega directly from the winery will cost about CDN$25.00 (less if you buy by the case, of course), but the Masthead price was around $39.00 That's not bad, considering the restaurant is slightly up-market! As we waited for our starters (my wife ordered the green salad and I had the crab cakes), the staff were attentive, but didn't interrupt our conversation. None of the silly questions experienced elsewhere, like, "how are the first few bites tasting" (a sure sign of conveyor-belt mediocrity, if ever there was one). No, the staff had the balance of just the right amount of presence and were very respectful. Our water was topped up constantly, as was our wine. At one point a very sweet girl server came and told me with significant concern that the crab cakes had a such-and-such coating that has traces of dairy in it. I thought that was a nice touch. I told her it would be fine and promised not to croak at the table. Whereupon she returned with a slice of rustic bread and balsamic vinegar and olive oil for me and gluten-free bread with whipped butter with a touch of honey, lemon and black pepper in it for my wife. Both were delicious. Our starters duly arrived and they were singularly scrumptious. For me, three little crab cakes perched on a thin bed of (I believe) spinach, with delicious dressing and a separate creamy sauce that was delightful. Possibly the best crab cakes I have ever had! Moist and flavourful. Very nice indeed. My wife really enjoyed her green salad and kept trying to get me to taste it (who knew a salad could be that good).? A two-piece jazz ensemble kicked in around that time (piano and double bass), playing smooth, familiar favourites from Nat King Cole, et al. Our entrees arrived with perfect timing. My wife had the filet mignon and I had the seared duck breast. Both were done to perfection, exactly as we had ordered them and the vegetables and potatoes were cooked just right. We ordered a second bottle of wine, having decided to get a cab home and fresh glasses arrived and the same tasting ritual was performed by our very capable waiter. This guy really knew what he was doing. I've been around the block and have eaten at lots of good places...lots of VERY good places and this waiter had it down. Pleasant with a touch of humour, but not overdoing it. Just on the money. Anyway, my Duck was simply spectacular and my wife said her steak was one of the best she'd ever had (she's from Alberta and knows her steak).! For desert, we both had an orange cornmeal crumble (at least, I think it was cornmeal) with blueberries and a rhubarb compote. It was really a great way to end the meal; not too dense or too sweet. I followed with a decaf espresso and a dram of single malt (Glenfarclas 12 y/o - they have a decent single malt list) and we sat and chatted and enjoyed the lovely scenery of Salt Spring Island across the channel as the sun began to go down. The bill appeared, accompanied by two truffles, drizzled with some yummy sauce and our day was complete. Just a lovely meal and a lovely experience. I almost don't like to mention the cost as it was such a great way to spend our anniversary, but I should say that this is the kind of restaurant where you can go and have the three course special for $40-or-so (there are entrees significantly cheaper than that, too), or you can spend much more if you're so inclined. Our bill came to around $260.00 including a healthy tip for excellent service. For a great night out, I consider that well worth the money. The waiter resealed our wine (there was half a bottle left) and called us a cab and we left very satisfied indeed. This was not simply going out for dinner. This was a memorable occasion, the quality and tone of which was made possible by the excellent staff at the Masthead and their wonderful food. A job very well done indeed. I was so pleased and will definitely be back there in the not-to-distant future, likely taking friends along, too."
