"This was an amazing pub in Colchester. It took 3 years to build up a great reputation and win many awards but then 3 weeks to go downhill due to personal circumstances. New owners took it over and it does not feel like the same pub. Gone are the friendly bar staff who knew us, what we liked and ones that could pour a proper pint. Drinks we got served had a good finger missing on all drinks. Bingo nights are not what this pub is. Its a Real Ale pub, serving decent, full pints. Maybe we'll try again in a few weeks but we'll see."

"As always, I get good service, a good little chat and a good cup of coffee. It always has been a little pricey, but that is Costa for you. You can't blame the staff. I am happy to say I go there on a regular basis, and will continue to do so."

"The Olive Branch is a small cafe in Wivenhoe that specialises in serving authentic vegan Syrian food. I went there last week for the first time on a beautiful sunny day for lunch. The place was nearly full when I arrived, and although the tables and chairs were close to each other, they were well-placed so I didn’t feel overlooked. I was served by two staff members during my time at The Olive Branch, and both of them were really hospitable and attentive. I really wanted to have a truly authentic experience, so I ordered their own special minty lemonade for £3. The drink arrived very quickly and looked quite attractive. Although the drink was quite bitter, it was cold and refreshing on such a hot day. The ice used was cloudy and small and looked homemade, which made the drink look cheap and less appealing, but in these hard financial times, I do not blame them. I decided to go for their ‘Double Olive Branch Platter’ for food which cost me and my partner £18. The menu did not have what was included on the platter, but the staff member tried his best to explain and used words such as ‘hummus’, ‘falafel’, and ‘olives’, and I was sold. The platter did not take long at all and definitely had the wow factor. It looked beautiful and fresh, showing a variety of different colours and textures. The platter was served with a basket of warm pita bread, which the staff kindly topped up towards the end of our meal to “mop up”. The hummus and falafels were excellent, I only wish there was more! There was only one small section of hummus with cucumber and one falafel each. There were several other foods, one that looked similar to hummus but had a slimy texture and exquisite taste (I did not enjoy this at all), a couple broad bean dishes that were fairly bland, olives that were coated in a very strong oil, a baby aubergine stuffed with peppers, and a vine leaf that was quite tasty. There was a nice mixed salad in the centre of the platter. I also ordered a slice of their chocolate cake, which cost £4.50. This was probably the most disappointing dish, as the cake was quite dry and looked as if it was a birthday cake bought from Tesco. If you are going to charge £4.50 a slice, then you would expect something homemade and fresh, especially as there is a coffee shop in close proximity that sells homemade vegan chocolate cake that is cheaper and in my experience, a lot nicer. Overall, it definitely felt like an authentic experience, but I would not order the platter or the cake again. However, if you are feeling adventurous, or want to try some new unusual foods, then I would suggest trying the platter. The staff there were amazing, the prices were reasonable (except the cake where I felt a little robbed) and the scenery was pleasant. I definitely recommend their hummus and falafel."

"We held a wake here for our beloved Mum and we couldn’t be more pleased with the efforts that Jim and his team put into it! Right from our first visit to see what was on offer, we felt like we were in safe hands. The buffet was fantastic with plenty of food for everyone and great value for money! We paid for 60 people, around 80 came, people took food home in the boxes provided and there was still food over. The venue is spacious, clean and comfy! To conclude, we were able to remember Mum with a fantastic wake that she would have enjoyed, had she still been with us."

"We last visited Grain back in January and would have loved to have returned earlier but due to the situation we've been in it hasn't been possible. So therefore we were hugely delighted that we could at last visit yesterday. This is a fabulous little small plates menu restaurant set in Colchester just behind the shops on North Hill road. Of course when we arrived things as we know are a little bit different. The welcome however wasn't it was just as friendly as before. We were then escorted to our table where they then put down a tray with your cutlery , side plate , glasses for water napkins on it for you to then lay out yourself. This was in order to limit the touching of things from the staff. The tables had been separated to allow plenty of space in between and with hand sanitizer placed on the tables not in use. The team have taken the option of not wearing face masks but did keep their distance as much as possible plus sanitising their hands after each visit to a table. They said they just wanted to keep it as normal as possible and the feedback they've received has been positive which to be honest included mine as it was nice to see. Now it's time to move on to the reason we were here. As I said this is a small plates menu designed for sharing using excellent local produce. The menu consisted of four vegetarian , four fish , three meat , one cheese four desserts. Our decision was easy because as we enjoyed the food so much last time it was only right as we said the our waitress that we would like to have the entire menu. We started with bread butter before moving on to the first two vegetarian courses. These were remfresh baby carrots , polenta chip , tarragon , pesto hay along with this came the whipped collets farm ricotta , essex figs , charred gem lettuce honey. Both dishes were an absolute delight and bursting with an array of flavours. Next to arrive were the other two dishes from the vegetarian section. These were a green bean pakora with tomato , tamarind berkwell which we could see why our waitress Summer said they were her favourite. Then your palate was delightfully refreshed by the courgette tagliatelle , basil , pumpkin seed olive. We now continued to the Fish section which started with a smoked mackerel pate , charred mackerel , kohlrabi soda bread and was delicious. Along with this came the soy glazed chalk stream trout with beetroot and a light horseradish which probably could have done with a slight bit more of a punch to it although it took nothing away from the dish. Next to arrive was the fabulous stone bass , brown crab mayonnaise red pepper romesco along with the last of the fish courses the roasted cod , seaweed confit potato , apple cider that amazing. Now we moved on to the Meat section and these were three fantastic dishes. The first was the lamb rump , sharwarma shoulder , potato , mint tomato. The second was one of the best chicken dishes I've had a bbq suffolk chicken leg , crispy potato , bacon peas. Then lastly heaven arrived in the amazingly rich beef sirloin , roast onion , black garlic smoked bordelaise. We were then asked by Summer if we'd like the cheese course and we said with a chuckle yes keep going we're having everything. So yes it was time for Cheese which was a selection of three cheeses a gorwydd caerphilly , sparkenhoe blue little rollright served with sourdough , crackers , oat digestives crab apple jelly. Bring on desserts. Yes now it's time for my favourite part desserts and lucky for me their were four. So sit back because here they come. The first two were the strawberry pavlova with aged balsamic basil ice cream that was nice and light and didn't overpower the dish. Along with this came a fantastically rich dark chocolate delice with cherries amaretto that was to die for. The last two desserts were the raspberries , yoghurt mousse pistachio ice cream before finishing with dutch quarter honey raw milk ice cream. I really would highly recommend a visit here as the food is excellent"

"Our first visit to the Wooden Fender and we know it will be the first of many! We had breakfast here, my husband had a full English I had the Full Fender sandwich. Both dishes were excellent, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs although we did our best to finish our breakfast. I liked the look of the lunch dinner specials on the boards so we will return soon. Great food, lovely people very good value."
