"My last few visits to the cafe have not been up to standard for what you would expect for John Lewis. Yesterday I visited the cafe again, hoping it may have improved but it really hasn 't! The whole cafe is in a muddle! It was 1pm on a Saturday and there was hardly any hot or cold food left, a choice between 2 prepacked sandwiches (tuna or egg). I don 't understand why the middle of the serving/ordering area is barricaded off, it makes the area look untidy and there isn 't a lot of space!? The ordering and serving food is confusing, people were unsure where to stand, where to order etc. I ordered a tea and was told there were no saucers because they 've not been washed up yet and I was given a small 'Nespresso ' spoon to stir my tea with. The tables were not cleared or clean, meaning you had to clear them yourself! I understand it has been difficult due to covid etc but this was low standards for John Lewis as I used to love the cafe, their fresh sandwiches etc."

"We used to frequently eat here for lunch before the renovations. Sadly, since reopening, the prices have gone up and the quality seems to have gone down. We arrived for lunch with our kids, and it was so cold in there. I asked a staff member if there was heating, to be told that there wasn’t any (the air con units apparently don’t do heat). If that’s the case, they’re going to be in trouble when the temperature really starts to drop. The breakfast was ok, but not very hot, and the price for a tea cake and jam was ridiculous £3.60, plus an extra £1.40 for a tiny pot of jam. So £5 altogether, which is shocking when you can get the same thing for a couple of quid in most other local garden centres/cafes. The kids meal options are again very pricey for what you get compared to other local places (Hyde hall etc), with the quantities being very small (half a sandwich). We really wanted to support this place after they reopened, but sadly I don’t think we’ll be returning. It’s an expensive meal out for a garden centre."

"Went to their Italian night and the food was delicious. My husband can’t eat garlic and they cooked him separate meals without any issue, even gave him tomato and avocado with his cold meat plate. Lovely evening"

"We don't often shop in Chelmsford but we did today and made several purchases in John Lewis where, as usual with John Lewis the staff were, without exception, helpful, friendly and informative. We had visited Benugo a couple of years ago for a light lunch and it was very pleasant and decided to go there again. What a mistake! We both wanted a glass of wine which was clearly stated to be on offer only to be told there was no wine and the opened bottle that was on display was not for sale. The staff seemed non plussed that we were asking for it (1.30 Sunday lunchtime) and shrugged their shoulders when we asked if the restaurant upstairs had it, not knowing at that point that Benugo was a concession. that and the fact that the staff were more interested in talking to each other rather than taking our order, led us to leave. By the way the restaurant upstairs was absolutely fine!"
