"We recently visited this place for a meal, after finding out it was dog friendly. The meal we had was exceptional and the staff were very professional and attentive. Not only were we fed well but the dog was also offered treats. We were so...impressed that we have already booked our next meal there. I hope that this place remains a well kept secret as it is perfect as it is."

"We wanted to meet and have lunch with two of our friends who we don't often see. the whole experience could not have been lovers. Smiley employees interested in support. tasty eating so beautiful presented and a glass beer for. two of our party and wee for the other two who slipped down very easily. no annoying, very relaxed and a pleasant atmosphere. we had a very pleasant lunch and will be more than happy to return."

"We have just returned home after spending two nights at the Royal Oak. On arrival we had a warm friendly welcome . The room was very clean and everything that was needed available. The restaurant food was of a high standard. Nothing was too much...trouble. We would highly recommend, look forward to a return stay. Thank you to all the staff that made our stay so enjoyable."

"Waste of a pub. We recently moved to the area were so pleased our home was near the Cross Keys. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only customers. There was zero atmosphere. No music or Wi-Fi. The drinks were pricey...too . We decided to give it another go and have Sunday lunch. The restaurant is really nice and the service was good. The food was not that good at all. My partner had the pork no crackling , apple sauce or mash just potatoes, mashed carrot swede tasteless cauliflower cheese, but what really let the meal down was the Yorkshire puddings , you get one they are the supermarket variety. At we expected better. Such a shame about this place as we heard they used to have a pool table, darts , music and was well used but not anymore. We won’t be going back. It changed hands in May wish the new owners will make it somewhere locals want to go."

"Located in the small village of Shap. The posted hours on the internet say they open at 4:30 pm. We happened to drive past at noon and they were serving, but only take away until 4:30. The fish was fried perfectly and the batter was very good. Ample chips and good tarter sauce. We also got some onion rings, which were excellent. This place is worth driving out of the way to go to."
